about me

My name is Molly Tompkins and I am a sophomore from Traverse City, Michigan in the Ross School of Business at the University of Michigan and a Minor in Writing. I am a people person. I love getting to know others and my greatest source of inspiration is personal connection. Two of my personal characteristics that are most important to me are being supportive and empathetic. One of my strongest personal values is commitment. I give my full time and effort to all my activities, and I consistently strive to maintain my commitments. I have a strong sense of fairness and justice. I see myself as an empathetic leader and I try to feel the way others might feel by putting myself in their position before I make decisions. I care about others’ feelings and try to help those in tough situations.

I found my love for writing, and thus my strength in writing, through my experience writing and publishing a book in high school. I authored a pictorial history of my local city-owned ski area called Hickory Hills, and through the book’s proceeds, raised over $60,000 for the hill. Through a local newspaper-sponsored blog and good press, I found more than seventy people, young and old, wanting to share stories and learned about their love for the hill, community and hard work. Through this project, I learned how personal testimonies are history. The more heartfelt stories and testimonies about Hickory I heard, the more strongly I felt about the necessity of its preservation.

The four photos above represent me and the experiences I value. From left to right, the first photo is of me at the top of a caslte in France overlooking the Mediterranean Sea. I love traveling and putting myself in new and uncomfortable situations, becuase I believe in the importance of new experiences. The second photo is of a sunset over the water in Traverse City, Michigan, my hometown. Family and where I grew up is very important to me and I will always remember where I came from. I grew up with a large extended family and really appreciate all of them and what they taught me. The third picture is of me and two of my best friends during Fall Break in Traverse City. I have made the most amazing, diverse and brilliant friends at Michigan and they push me to be better every single day. The last picture is of the Ross School of Business student body on a celebration day this fall. I am very engaged in the Ross community and I hope to eventually work in consulting.
